Alumni Return to Campus for Cultural Leadership Consortium

An alumnus speaks at the Cultural Leadership Consortium.

By collaborating with alumni, Knox students polished their leadership skills and got advice on how to run student organizations in a more efficient and inclusive way.

At the Cultural Leadership Consortium in May, current and newly elected student officers of cultural organizations connected with alumni who founded or held leadership positions in their organizations. These alumni led sessions and provided guidance on how students can drive their organizations forward with inclusive and result-oriented leadership.

"Their guidance helped students determine their legacy as leaders of these organizations and Knox College," said Anabel Menifee, associate director of Alumni Engagement.

In addition to providing a leadership workshop for the 13 organizations (listed below), the consortium was meant to increase collaboration between the student organizations. The event allowed student leaders to connect and develop ideas on how to utilize their resources and ideas in a more efficient way.

Menifee said the consortium also gave alumni the chance to increase their campus involvement. "It provided an opportunity for alumni to reengage with the college, learn and be part of what the cultural organizations are doing, and invest their time in to a cause that is dear to their hearts."

Menifee says the alumni were encouraged to know that students are passionate about their causes and are moving the organizations in the right direction. "Several of the alumni were willing to lend their support whether it be through gifts, partnerships, or conversation."

Isis Ferguson '01 participated in the consortium and was the closing speaker. While at Knox, Ferguson was a member of Students Against Sexism in Society (SASS) a tutor for youth at the Allied Blacks for Liberty and Equality (ABLE) house, a Gender and Women's Studies major, and was involved in the early iterations of the Human Rights Center.

"These experiences put me into meaningful relationships with professors, administrators, and older students who modeled what it meant to care and to practice that care," said Ferguson. "Since graduating from Knox, I've sought out work that continued in the tradition of building systems of care and support and explicitly addressing injustice and inequity."
