Award-winning Writer, Scholar to Speak on Islamic World

Journalist, author, and foreign policy analyst Robin Wright will present a lecture, "Rock the Casbah: Rage and Rebellion across the Islamic World" at 7:30 p.m. February 28 on the Knox College campus. The event will be in Kresge Recital Hall, Ford Center for the Fine Arts.

A book-signing will take place after the lecture.

Wright, a longtime international correspondent, has reported from more than 140 countries and written for various publications, including The Washington Post, the Sunday Times of London, The New Yorker, TIME, and Foreign Affairs. She has worked in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Europe.

She has written several books, including Rock the Casbah: Rage and Rebellion across the Islamic World and Dreams and Shadows: The Future of the Middle East. A frequent broadcast news commentator, Wright has appeared in recent weeks on NPR Weekend Edition, ABC-TV's This Week, CNN's State of the Union, and BBC World News America.

Now a U.S. Institute of Peace Senior Fellow and Woodrow Wilson International Center Distinguished Scholar, Wright previously has been a fellow at the Brookings Institution and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. She also was a fellow at Duke University, Stanford University, Yale University, the University of California at Santa Barbara, and the University of Southern California.

She has received many awards for her work, including the U.N. Correspondents Gold Medal, the National Magazine Award, and the Overseas Press Club Award for "best reporting in any medium requiring exceptional courage and initiative." In 2004, the American Academy of Diplomacy selected her as the journalist of the year.

Wright's appearance at Knox College is sponsored by the Eleanor Stellyes Center for Global Studies, which brings guest speakers from around the world to the Knox campus. The event is one of several special lectures and events taking place this year in honor of Knox College's 175th anniversary.
