"Africa is not just one big place," says Azumah Daniel Cofie, president of Harambee, the African cultural interest club at Knox College, as he explains the goals for African Week 2013.
"Africa is very diverse, different tribes, over 1,000 different languages. [My country,] Ghana is a multicultural society. We have two main religions, Christian and Muslim, five major tribes, at least ten local languages."
Harambee kicked off the week with a Nov. 4 cultural workshop designed for grade school students in the local Boys and Girls Club. "We want to give back to the Galesburg community, by showcasing African cultural heritage and our diverse traditions," Cofie said. Workshop activities included African music, dance, games and making bead-jewelry.
"The European colonizers came from different countries -- England, France, Portugal," explains Cofie, a senior economics major from Accra, Ghana. "At Knox I've met students from different countries in Africa, African students who speak French, others who speak English."
