Charles Gibbs Elected to Knox College Board

Galesburg Native, Now Texas Attorney

Charles R. Gibbs of Dallas, Texas, has been elected to the Knox College Board of Trustees. An attorney, Gibbs focuses on financial restructuring in a variety of industries, with a particular emphasis on the real estate, energy, retail and textile industries.

"Chuck brings a new perspective to the Board," says Roger Taylor, Knox's president. "He is the son of Knox alumni and a Galesburg native, and he has found success in finance and law. His commitment to liberal arts education will help the College continue to serve talented young people."

Gibbs is a Galesburg native whose parents, Chuck and Mary Gibbs, both graduated from Knox. "My overriding goal is to contribute to fostering the sense of independence, engagement and commitment that I, as the product of two Knox alumni, benefitted from as I was growing up. It is only at the crossroads of these values, in the context of a diverse liberal arts education that our youth may transform into well-informed and well-rounded adults. It is my sincere hope that, as a member of the Board, I will actively participate in this transformative process."

Gibbs is a partner at the law firm of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP and a member of the firm's management committee. In his practice, Gibbs serves as counsel to debtors as well as various types of secured and unsecured creditors in restructuring engagements that often involve multijurisdictional and cross-border matters. Gibbs also lectures frequently on various bankruptcy and creditors' rights topics.

Gibbs received his B.A. from Duke University in 1974 and his M.B.A. and J.D. in 1978 from Southern Methodist University, where he was lead articles editor of the Southwestern Law Journal. He is a member of the State Bar of Texas, the American Bar Association and the Dallas Bar Association and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the 1st, 4th, 5th, 8th and 11th Circuits, as well as the U.S. District Courts for the Northern, Southern, Western and Eastern Districts of Texas. Gibbs is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute and a Life Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation.

Gibbs is included in "Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business," and "The Best Lawyers in America," and has been named in surveys of his peers as a Texas "Super Lawyer."

Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 47 states and 48 countries. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
