GALESBURG -- The Knox College Choir, directed by Laura Lane, professor of music, presents its Fall Concert during Knox's Family Weekend at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 26, in Kresge Recital Hall, Ford Center for the Fine Arts, on the Knox campus in Galesburg, Illinois. Admission is free and open to the public.
"One of the highlights of the concert is 'Luk Luk Lumbu,' a folk song from the Banyuwangi region of Indonesia, sung in Osing with the singers imitating the 'gamelan,' a native instrumental percussion ensemble," Lane said. ?The women of the choir perform 'Song of Perfect Propriety,' an extremely challenging setting of a poem by feminist literary writer Dorothy Parker, while the men are featured in a traditional Scottish folk song, 'Loch Lomond.' 'Cloth of Glory,' by Mike Harding, honors the victims of the September 11 2001 attacks.?
The 60-voice choir also will perform "Si ch'io vorrei morire," by Claudio Monteverdi; "Sicut cervus," by Giovanni Palestrina; a selection from "Ein Deutches Requiem," by Johannes Brahms; and "Animal Crackers," by Eric Whitacre.
Soloists are John Eisemann, baritone, in 'Loch Lomond' and Kate Cochran, soprano, in 'Luk Luk Lumbu.' The piano accompanist is Amber Clark.
The Knox College Chamber Singers will perform four works, 'Io mi son giovinetta,' a madrigal by Claudio Monteverdi; 'Ave Verum Corpus,' by William Byrd; 'Contre qui,' by Morten Lauridsen; and 'Swingle Song,' by Darmon Meader, the founder and music director of New York Voices.
Among the compact discs recorded by the Knox College Choir are the programs from their 2006 tour of Spain, their 2002 U.S. tour, and their 1999 tour of Vienna, Salzburg and Prague. Knox College Choir CDs are available at the Knox College Bookstore and its website, http://www.knox.edu/bookstore.xml
