Applications are now being accepted for Knox College for Kids, a summer enrichment program that will offer more than 40 courses in art, music, theatre, dance, literature, writing, history, mathematics, science and languages, for students in first through eighth grade.
Knox College for Kids will be held weekdays from June 16 to June 27 on the Knox campus in Galesburg. Applications are available from the Knox College website at http://www.knox.edu/college4kids.xml or at local schools. Applications are due on May 15.
Created by Knox College in 1975, Knox College for Kids is expanding its curriculum this year with two new programs -- a morning program for students entering first or second grades, and an afternoon athletics program for all grade levels. Co-directors are assistant professor Jason Helfer and visiting assistant professor Stephen Schroth, of the Knox College Educational Studies Department.
The new junior program for first and second graders features three classes that cover literature, theatre, music, dance, mathematics and science. It is offered the same hours as the regular morning courses, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.
The new afternoon athletics program, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., is an option for any student who is also enrolled in the morning classes. Taught by Knox College coaches and students, it will focus on gamesmanship, strategy, and sportsmanship through a variety of activities.
The regular curriculum, for grades three through eight, include six courses in various kinds of art; five in music, theatre and dance; six in history, twelve in literature, film and writing; eleven in science and mathematics; and six in languages. A complete course catalog can be downloaded from the Knox College for Kids website at http://www.knox.edu/college4kids.xml
The fee for the regular or junior morning program is $115. The fee for the afternoon athletics program is an additional $100.
Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 45 states and 44 nations. Knox's 'Old Main' is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
