Applications for Knox College for Kids

Deadline, May 15, 2009

Applications are now being accepted for Knox College for Kids, a summer enrichment program that will offer 45 courses in art, music, theatre, dance, literature, writing, history, mathematics, science and languages. Courses are offered for students who will be entering first through ninth grade this fall.

Knox College for Kids will be held weekday mornings, 9 a.m. to 12 noon, from June 15 through June 26 on the Knox campus in Galesburg. Applications and a course catalog are available from the Knox College website at http://www.knox.edu/college4kids.xml or at local schools. Applications are due on May 15.

The program for students entering grades three through nine offers five courses in art, music, theater and dance; 14 in history and social science; eleven in science, mathematics and technology; and six in languages. Students enroll in three hour-long classes.

The junior program is designed for students entering first and second grade in the fall. All junior program students take the same three classes, which cover literature and theater, dance and movement, and mathematics and science.

The fee for the regular or junior program is $115. Limited scholarship funds are available.

Knox College for Kids was created by Knox College in 1975 as a summer enrichment program for high-achieving grade school students. Classes are taught by Knox College faculty and master teachers from area schools. In addition, a number of Educational Studies students at Knox College have received REACH fellowships from the College to support their work as instructors and teaching assistants in this year's program.

Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 47 states and 48 countries. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
