Community Band Concert, May 23

The Knox Sandburg Community Concert Band will feature internationally acclaimed composer Robert Sheldon as guest conductor at its concert at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 23, in the Orpheum Theater, 60 S. Kellogg St., Galesburg, IL. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for Knox students and are available at the door or from the Orpheum Ticket Office, 57 S. Kellogg, 309-342-2299.
 
Sheldon, who is the concert band editor for Alfred Publishing Company, will direct two of his compositions, "A Longford Legend," based on 18th century Irish street ballads, and "As A Wind From the North," inspired by the writings of Byron Reece and the hymn "King of Glory."

"Robert Sheldon's works are among the most performed in wind band music today," said Bernie Potter, an instructor in music at Knox College and the Community Band's regular conductor. "We are excited to work with him, both in rehearsal on May 9 and again at the concert on May 23."

Also at the concert, Potter will direct the 40-member band in works by Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Clifton Williams and Samuel Hazo.

Sheldon has been commissioned to write more than 75 compositions for concert band and has served as a music education clinician at colleges and universities in the U.S., Japan, Canada, and China. He has won numerous awards from The American School Band Directors Association and The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. In 1990, Sheldon received the International Outstanding Bandmaster of the Year award from the International Assembly of Phi Beta Mu. He has taught in Florida and Illinois public schools and has served on the faculty of Florida State University as a teacher and band director.

The Knox Sandburg Community Band is made up of Knox College students, Carl Sandburg College students and community members from the Galesburg area. Membership is open to all student and adult band musicians.
