Knox College offers its condolences to the students, families, and employees of Northern Illinois University. Our hearts go out to the entire campus and their families. All of us at Knox send our thoughts and prayers to the students, families, faculty and staff who have been affected by this horror.
The sudden, senseless nature of this tragedy reminds us of the special nature of our campus community. It should also remind us that taking care of each other is important to our own well-being, and Knox students are encouraged to get in touch with their families and friends.
Students who have difficulty or concerns in response to this tragedy are encouraged to call the Counseling Center for assistance.

Dear President Peters,
Let me join the Knox College Student Senate in expressing Knox's sympathy and support to you and the rest of the Northern Illinois University Community for the tragedy of February 14 and aftermath. I can hardly imagine how trying the experience must have been. It is evident to me that the NIU students and the rest of the University conducted themselves with courage, resolve and dignity, and that they continue to do so.
I am pleased that one of NIU and Knox's most distinguished graduates, Dr. Robert Wallace, Knox Class of 1958, has agreed to deliver this note to you.
Please know that you and the NIU Community are in the thoughts and prayers of the members of the Knox Community.
Sincerely,
Roger L. Taylor '63
President, Knox College
IN THE STUDENT SENATE OF KNOX COLLEGE
February 21, 2008
Introduced and passed unanimously by the Student Senate on behalf of the Student Body
A Letter to Northern Illinois University Expressing the Shock and Grief of the Students of Knox College With Regards to the Events of February 14, 2008
To the community of Northern Illinois University,
As a college community we were shocked and grief stricken to learn of the senseless acts of tragic violence that took place on your campus Thursday, February 14, 2008.
Only two short hours separate our campuses, but even that short distance does not separate us now. Today we stand with the students, faculty, staff, and administration of Northern Illinois in your hour of need. In the days since the tragedy, your community has shown great strength during this difficult time. Yours is a strength that inspires us all.
Abraham Lincoln, who spoke at Knox College in 1858, and whose leadership and strength we as a College value, once wrote, "The strongest bond of human sympathy, outside of the family relation, should be one uniting all working people, of all nations, and tongues, and kindreds." We are bound together, the Knox College community and yours, by our determination to improve the world for ourselves and our fellow man.
We join you in mourning for and reflecting on the fallen, the families, and the friends. The students of Knox College extend to your community our thoughts, prayers, sympathy, hope and much more, to each and every one affected by this horrible tragedy.
With hope for a better future for all,
The Student Body of Knox College
