Lecture by 'Conservative Environmentalist' Dan Dagget, Sept. 28

Dan Dagget, founder and president of EcoResults!, will give a talk, "From Ecoradical to Conservative Environmentalist," at 7 p.m., Tuesday, September 28, in the Francois Room E-117, in the Umbeck Science-Mathematics Center, Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois.

The lecture is free and open to the public. It is part of the EquiKnox series of events sponsored by the College's Presidential Task Force on Sustainability.

Designated one of the 100 top grass roots activists by the Sierra Club in 1992, Dagget writes in his on-line autobiography that he has worked against coal mines in Ohio and in favor of wilderness land designation in Arizona. His campaign against uranium mining near the Grand Canyon included helping to organize some of the first direct actions of Earth First!.

Since then, Dagget writes, he has come to believe that "the principles of conservatism -- individual initiative, personal accountability, the free market, and rewards for results -- are more effective at achieving environmental goals... than the liberal alternative -- regulation and protection." Dagget's publications include "Gardeners of Eden, Rediscovering Our Importance to Nature," and "Beyond the Rangeland Conflict, Toward a West That Works."

Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 45 states and 48 countries. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
