Susan Schlaufman Deans has been elected to the Knox College Board of Trustees. A Knox College graduate, Deans recently retired from The Daily Camera newspaper in Boulder, Colorado.
"Sue has been a great mentor to Knox students," explains Knox College President Roger Taylor. "She helps our students understand how they can contribute to the larger world. As a trustee, she will bring a wealth of experience and expertise to the enterprise," Taylor adds.
Deans retired earlier this year from The Daily Camera, the newspaper where she got her first job in journalism in 1977, rising in ten years from reporter to assistant managing editor. At The Sun News in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, she was managing editor from 1987 to 1990 and editor and vice-president from 1990 to 1999. During her tenure at The Sun News, it was named one of America's best small newspapers by the American Society of Newspaper Editors, and one of the world's best-designed newspapers by the Society of Newspaper Design. Deans was assistant managing editor of The Rocky Mountain News in Denver from 1999 to 2003, when she returned to The Daily Camera as editor and vice president. She stepped down as editor earlier this year and stayed on as senior editor and columnist until her retirement in May.
Deans also has served on the boards of directors of the American Society of Newspaper Editors and the Associated Press Managing Editors.
Deans earned a bachelor's degree from Knox in English, and a master's in journalism from the University of Colorado at Boulder. She has served Knox in volunteer positions with the Admission, Advancement, and Career Services offices, and on the Alumni Advisory Council for the Knox Magazine.
Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 45 states and 44 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
