Knox College has elected Elzelien "Ellie" Hartog to the Knox Board of Trustees. Hartog, a 1966 graduate of Knox, is a child advocate and social worker from Ridgefield, Connecticut.

Hartog credits her Knox education with helping her develop "critical thinking, solid communication skills and an appreciation for the value of diversity that a liberal arts education can provide."

As a trustee, Hartog hopes to be able to "help students experience this nurturing, intellectual environment."

Hartog currently serves as Director of Interagency Teams for the Child Guidance Center of Southern Connecticut. Hartog coordinates the Sexual Abuse Response Team, a public-private multidisciplinary partnership for the investigation, protection and treatment for children who have been sexually or severely physically abused. The program was the first in Connecticut to be accredited as a Children's Advocacy Center by the National Children's Alliance.

Knox College President Roger Taylor says Hartog "is a tireless advocate for children. Her experience and perspective will be a tremendous asset to the Knox Board."

After her graduation from Knox, Hartog earned a master's degree in social work from the University of Chicago. In 1999, Hartog formed the Connecticut state chapter of the National Children's Alliance and served as its chair for 7 years. She is the co-chair of the Governor's Task Force on Justice for Abused Children / Multidisciplinary Team Evaluation Subcommittee, and has also served as a site reviewer for the National Children's Alliance.

She is a member of National Association of Social Workers and has served on the Board of the Connecticut chapter of American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children (APSAC).

Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 47 states and 48 countries. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
