Five Knox College students have been recognized for their photographic talents in the third annual Associated Colleges of the Midwest Off-Campus Study Photo Contest.
The competition was open to students from ACM colleges who have participated in off-campus study programs. The ACM is a consortium consisting of Knox College and 13 other independent liberal arts colleges.
After reviewing the 99 contest entries from 69 different students, judges awarded a grand prize; first-, second-, and third-place prizes in the categories of Artistry, People, and Stories; and 14 honorable mentions.
The photos that won a prize or an honorable mention will be displayed at ACM campuses in a traveling exhibit during early 2011. They also will be shown at the ACM Student Symposium on Off-Campus Study in Chicago on April 15-16.
The Knox students who received honors were:
* Victoria Ezell, a junior from Stamford, Connecticut, who is majoring in creative writing and classics. She won second place in the Artistry category for her photo, "Stained Glass."
Ezell took the photo inside Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France, while she was participating in an off-campus program at the Danish Institute for Study Abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark, in fall 2010.
* Jae Hyoung Lee, a senior from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, who is majoring in neuroscience. He took third place in the Artistry category for his photo, "Bracelets."
He took the photo in Tarangire, Tanzania, while participating in the ACM Tanzania: Ecology & Human Origins program in fall 2009.
* Sara DeMaria, a senior from Columbus, Ohio, who is majoring in biology. She received an honorable mention for "Out to Dry," a photo she took in Waitomo, New Zealand, while participating in AustraLearn Semester Abroad in fall 2009.
* John Evan Feeley, a sophomore from Old Orchard Beach, Maine. He received an honorable mention for "Juggling Anarchy," a photo he took in Barcelona, Spain, while enrolled in the Knox College Program in Barcelona in fall 2010.
* Andrea Houlihan, a senior from North Aurora, Illinois, who has a self-designed major in international journalism. She received an honorable mention for "Mosadi Mogolo," a photo taken in Maun, Botswana, while she participated in the ACM Botswana: University Immersion in Southern Africa program in spring 2010.
Their photographs are posted on the ACM website.
