Knox Among Leaders for Students Receiving Fulbright Fellowships

Knox College is among the top schools in the U.S. in the number of students who are receiving Fulbright Fellowships, one of the nation's most prestigious awards for international post-graduate study.

The data were gathered by the Institute of International Education, which administers the Fulbright Fellowship program, and reported recently in The Chronicle of Higher Education.

In 2008 -- the year covered by the data -- three of Knox's graduating seniors received Fulbright Fellowships, placing Knox in the top 50 among all liberal arts colleges.

In the most recent decade, 15 Knox students have been awarded Fulbright Fellowships.

"On average, 6 Knox students apply for Fulbrights each year, and 2 to 3 are selected," said Lawrence B. Breitborde, Dean of the College and Vice President for Academic Affairs. "The consistent record shows that Knox students are well prepared for the rigors of international study, and that they are submitting solid applications."

The Chronicle article listed Knox and 48 other colleges with three or more fellowship winners. Colleges with fewer than three recipients in 2008 are listed on the Fulbright website.

The data also show that Knox has one of the highest success rates for Fulbright applicants. In 2008, three of Knox's five applicants were awarded fellowships. The 60-percent success rate ranks Knox fifth among the 49 colleges listed in the article. Knox also had three winners in 1999 and 2001, with two winners in 2003 and 2006, and one winner in 2005 and 2007.

A total of 37 Knox students, faculty and alumni have been awarded Fulbright Fellowships since 1951.
