Festivities celebrate 175th anniversary of the founding of Knox and Galesburg

Knox College HomecomingWith 1,000 Knox College alumni expected in Galesburg October 14-16 for the College's Homecoming Weekend 2011, this year highlights the celebration of 175th anniversary of the founding of Knox and Galesburg.

The 175th festivities will include the first ever joint college-community "Pumphandle," at 4 p.m., Friday, October 14. Knox President Teresa Amott and Galesburg Mayor Salvador Garza will lead the welcoming line, beginning on the South Lawn of Old Main. A Knox tradition dating back more than 100 years, Pumphandle is an all-campus greeting line held at the start of the academic year. Pumphandles also have now become part of Homecoming and Commencement week events.

Other activities will include events in art, music and literature; the Homecoming football game with Illinois College, along with class reunions and dinners.

Friday, October 14

4 p.m.
Community Pumphandle on the South Lawn of Old Main, hosted by Knox President Teresa Amott and Galesburg Mayor Sal Garza.

8 p.m.
Artist's Talk and Reception with Rick Ortner, professor of art at Louisiana State University and professor emeritus of art at Knox College, who will discuss the exhibit of his paintings. Round Room, Ford Center for the Fine Arts.

9 p.m.
Alumni Jam Session in the Bier Garten, Cherry Street Restaurant & Bar, 57 South Cherry Street

Saturday, October 15

10 a.m.
Homecoming Convocation. Remarks by Knox College President Teresa Amott, Senior Class President Tyler O'Neill '12, and Life Trustee Frank Kerous '61. Kresge Hall, Ford Center for the Fine Arts. Also, presentation of 2011 Knox Service Awards to Rick '83 and Mary Filosa Brown '82; Brooks Goedeker '02; and David '70 and Judy Waggoner Lambert '71

11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Alumni & Faculty Book Signing. Two dozen Knox College faculty and alumni will autograph their books. Including Bill Barnhart '68, author of "John Paul Stevens: An Independent Life"; Rod Davis and Douglas Wilson, co-director of the Lincoln Studies Center at Knox College; professor Lance Factor, author of "Chapel in the Sky: Knox College's Old Main and Its Masonic Architect"; Emeritus Professor Robert Hellenga, author of "Snakewoman of Little Egypt"; and Owen Muelder '63, author of "The Underground Railroad in Western Illinois." Lobby, Ford Center for the Fine Arts.

1:00 p.m.
Historic Tour of Hope Cemetery. Local historian Rex Cherrington '73 will focus on prominent figures from Knox and Galesburg who are buried in Hope Cemetery, at Main and Academy Streets in Galesburg.

1:00 p.m.
Knox Football vs. Illinois College. Halftime activities will include the Knox College DanceSquad, recognition of 2011 Hall of Fame Inductees and the Class of '76 Marching Kazoo Band. Knosher Bowl.

3:00 p.m.
"Exhibiting the Underrepresented: Curating at Krannert Art Museum"; an art history lecture by Katie Koca Polite '03. Round Room, Ford Center for the Fine Arts.

3:00 p.m. Discussion: "Dorothea Tanning '32: From Knox College Roots to Worldwide Fame"; led by Robin Metz, Post Professor of English and director of the Program in Creative Writing. Tanning is one of Knox's most internationally acclaimed alumni, who celebrated her 100th birthday in 2010. Cherry Street Restaurant & Bar, 57 South Cherry Street
