Knox Community Offers Advice for Incoming Students
by Elise Goitia '18
Starting something new can be a little uncomfortable, but members of the Knox College community are helping to make the transition easier for incoming students.
Current and past Knox students responded through social media with advice to prepare the newest members of the Knox community, the Class of 2021, and to make them feel welcome on campus.
Some of the advice mentioned professors, while others touched on topics such as community engagement, clubs and organizations, and activism.
Here is some of that advice:
- "Get involved in the larger Galesburg community! Talk to business owners! Go to the public library! Join local activist groups!"—Emily Roberts '16
- "Get involved in campus. If it's not something directly student-related like student government, join The Knox Student or better yet join the Knox College Choir. You will meet some great people and have stories to tell for the rest of your life!"—Matthew Lenburg '99
- "Don't ever, under any circumstances, EVER take an 8:00 a.m. class."—Natasha Caudill '20
- "Do something that scares you."—Shane Donegan '10
- "Get to know your professors."—Jan Dressel '71
- "Expand your comfort zone and become friends with someone who doesn't look like you, who wasn't raised the way you were, who didn't live in the same area as you did. When you take the time to get to know people, you will expand yourself."—Nyerere K Billups Sr. '99
- "Embrace the library, especially after your first term."—Theodore Turner '20
- "Go Greek. You'll meet some amazing people."—Bob Lallky '19
- "Bring a fan for your room."—Melissa Wood '20
- "Always remember: Flunk Day is tomorrow."—Soleil Smith '20
