Knox College Graduate Named President of Carl Sandburg College

Lori Sundberg, a Knox College graduate who has taught at Knox and is currently a vice president of Carl Sandburg College, has been named president of Carl Sandburg College.

When Sundberg takes office in July 2010, she will join Roger Taylor and Karen Bowyer in the ranks of Knox graduates currently serving as college presidents. Taylor has been president of Knox since 2001. Bowyer has been president of Dyersburg State Community College in Dyersburg, Tennessee, since 1984. Taylor and Bowyer are both 1963 Knox graduates.

Sundberg completed a bachelor's degree at Knox in 1995 after earning an associate's degree at Carl Sandburg College. She majored in economics and history and served as a lecturer in economics at Knox in 2005 and 2006.

Currently vice president of academic services, Sundberg is "a dedicated, visionary higher education professional with experience in the areas of marketing, grant writing, research, human resources, negotiations, and administrative and academic services," said a news release from Carl Sandburg College.

Sundberg will be the sixth president of Carl Sandburg College and the first woman to hold the position since the college was founded in 1966. Bowyer, who received an honorary doctorate from Knox in 1985, was the first woman to lead a public college in Tennessee.

Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 47 states and 48 countries. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
