Knox President C. Andrew McGadney Inspires at Galesburg MLK Day Celebration

Knox College President C. Andrew McGadney provided the keynote address at Galesburg’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. annual holiday breakfast on January 20 at Cedar Creek Hall. The celebration, originally scheduled for January 15 but postponed due to weather, included moments of reflection, poignant essays, and song.

Galesburg High School junior Kymorrah Jackson served as master of ceremonies for the program which began with an opening invocation by Semenya McCord '71. Galesburg Junior High student Cora Schaafsma added to the celebration by reciting her winning essay, reflecting on historical events and the enduring relevance of Dr. King's principles. The powerful message was further underscored by participants joining together to sing "We Shall Overcome."

President McGadney expressed excitement to be part of the event, congratulated Schaafsma on her winning essay, and thanked Fourth Ward City Council Member Dwight White for inviting him to speak.

Honoring the public commemoration of a hero who stood tall against bigotry and injustice, McGadney spoke passionately about King's commitment to equality, justice, and non-violence. He emphasized the importance of action and standing up during times of controversy. McGadney asked the audience to consider where they stand and how they respond when others need support, urging them to fight against oppression and indifference.

McGadney shared the powerful lyrics from “If I Can Help Somebody" by Alma Bazel Androzzo, highlighting the pursuit of compassionate action.

The theme of hope for the future resonated strongly in McGadney's address. He encouraged the audience to remain hopeful, acknowledging progress while steadfastly working towards a better future.

Reiterating three key points—standing up against injustice, recognizing the power in action, and maintaining hope for the future—McGadney reminded the audience of their greatest privilege as Americans: the right to vote. He urged them to exercise this privilege, emphasizing the historical struggle for voting rights and the need to stand up and take action through voting.

Closing remarks from Dwight White expressed gratitude to everyone for their participation and highlighted the MLK committee's scholarship initiatives. Knox Director of Spiritual Life Dan Marlin concluded the event with a moment of silence and benediction.
