Knox Soccer Lovers Offer World Cup Predictions

Brazil wins non-scientific poll of four football fans

Brazil got the most votes in a non-scientific poll of four football fans -- soccer lovers -- at the Harambee Soccer Tournament at Knox College in May. The tournament drew teams of Knox students, as well as local residents and students from Galesburg High School and Carl Sandburg College. It was sponsored by Harambee, the African student club, as a fund raising event for an AIDS charity in Africa.

World Cup predictions follow from an international group of four players on the Knox men's soccer team who played in the Harambee tournament.

I'm hoping for my team, Cameroon, but I know there are many good teams out there -- Brazil, Ghana, Argentina. You never know -- I would like an African country to go far. -- Donald Tchopya, a first year student with family in Cameroon, who graduated high school in San Francisco.

Spain is the most rounded team. Argentina, Brazil struggled. I don't think Italy will win it. It's bad that I should say that, because that's where I'm from. I definitely think one of the African teams will go far. I tell you a prediction for this [Harambee Club] tournament: we're going to win. -- Luca Rajola-Pescarini, Italy.

I was planning to go to South Africa, but when I found out that it will be in Brazil in 2014, I decided that I would go home, instead. I think this year will be one of the best -- four or five teams that have a realistic chance of winning. Spain -- this could be their year, but they're known to have good teams and squandered them in the World Cup. -- Lawrence Povoas, Brazil.

USA-England is the one on my mind. There's always Brazil, and Spain have played well. USA also played well in the Confederations Cup. I'm excited about it -- I love soccer. -- Jeff Wozencraft, Arlington Heights, Illinois, and an all-conference pick from the 2009-10 Knox Prairie Fire men's soccer team.

The tournament was a fund raiser -- all proceeds went to an AIDS organization in my home country of Botswana. It was won by Team of Doom -- Knox students headed by Jared Jaggers. Second place was Young Starz, students from Galesburg High School and Carl Sandburg College, and in 3rd place was Team Portugal, made up of local residents, mainly from Knoxville and Monmouth. -- Abena Quainoo, Botswana.
