Knox Students Celebrate Black History Month 2014

The Knox campus community observes Black History Month.

Knox College student organizations present a series of activities for the campus community to celebrate Black History Month 2014. Events open to students are coordinated by ABLE, Allied Blacks for Liberty and Equality; along with Lo Nuestro and Women of Influence. They include:

Fireside Chats

Sunday afternoons from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the A.B.L.E. Center. Knox College faculty and staff share their experiences in higher education, both as a student and now working in the field. Come learn more about these Knox community members!

  • February 2: Travis Greenlee - Assistant Director of Student Activities and Engagement
  • February 9: Mary Crawford - Professor and Chair of Chemistry
  • February 16: Dan Jackson - Assistant Coach of Men's Basketball
  • February 23: Laura Schnack - Associate Dean of Students

ABLE Open Meetings

  • 02/05: Showing of "Glory" in Kresge Hall. An Academy Award winning American drama based on the history of the first formal unit of the US army to be entirely composed of African Americans during the Civil War -- 13 of whom were originally from Galesburg, Illinois.
  • 02/19: Discussion of the "Stand Your Ground" law that gained much attention after the case of Trayvon Martin. We will be discussing the law and its implications for people of color.

Special Events

  • Saturday, February 8: Home Cooked Meal. ABLE and members of the local community show how to prepare recipes that are easy and cheap! 6 p.m. at the ABLE Center.
  • Saturday, February 15: Frankie Soto, spoken word artist. Opening acts will be performed by Knox students. 6:30 p.m. in Kresge Hall
