More than 30 Knox College students recently were elected to Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest academic honor society and, according to its website, "a leading advocate for excellence in the liberal arts and sciences." Membership in the society is based on academic achievement. Most inductees are seniors, and a limited number of especially outstanding students may be elected at the end of their junior year.

Knox College's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa was chartered in 1916, the first at an undergraduate liberal arts college in Illinois. Knox's Delta chapter is the fourth-oldest chapter in Illinois. Initiates sign an official roll book that has been in use at Knox since the chapter's founding.
