Knox College students inducted to Phi Beta Kappa sign a century-old membership register

Thirty-three Knox College students -- 29 graduating seniors and four juniors -- added their signatures to the membership roster of the college's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa in June. They joined the roll of academically distinguished students, recorded in a small, leather-bound volume, who have been inducted into Knox's chapter of the prestigious national academic honor society since it was chartered nearly 100 years ago.

Membership is based on academic achievement. Most inductees are seniors; a limited number of especially outstanding students may be elected at the end of their junior year.

Fewer than 10% of the nation's colleges and universities have chapters of Phi Beta Kappa. The Knox chapter was chartered in 1916-17, the third-oldest in Illinois and the first in the state at a liberal arts college.
