Knox to Host Acclaimed Speaker on Preventing Gender Violence

Dr. Jackson Katz, an author and renowned pioneer in the field of educating people to prevent gender violence, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 10, on the Knox College campus. His presentation is titled, "More Than a Few Good Men: A Lecture on American Manhood and Violence Against Women."

The event will be in Harbach Theatre in the Ford Center for the Fine Arts.

Katz will discuss gender violence as a societal issue, not only as a so-called "women's issue." For example, he will share stories from his gender violence prevention work with the United States Marine Corps, professional and collegiate athletes, and college fraternities, and he will illustrate how sports culture, advertising, and other media contribute to levels of gender violence.

He also will be available to sign books after the lecture concludes. Copies of his first book, The Macho Paradox: Why Some Men Hurt Women and How All Men Can Help, are on reserve in Seymour Library and will be available for sale at his lecture. Students also may enter a drawing to receive a free copy of the book and the opportunity to meet Katz at the booksigning reception.

Katz's lecture is among several events being planned this winter and spring to showcase Knox College's historic commitment to provide all students with an educational environment that is free from discrimination of all types.

An educator, author, filmmaker, and cultural theorist, Katz is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking work in the field of gender violence prevention education and critical media literacy. He has lectured on numerous college and high school campuses and has conducted hundreds of professional trainings, seminars, and workshops all over the world.

He is co-founder of the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) program, the leading gender violence prevention initiative in professional and college athletics. He has created and co-created educational videos for college and high school students, including Tough Guise: Violence, Media, and the Crisis in Masculinity (2000), Wrestling with Manhood (2002) and Spin the Bottle: Sex, Lies and Alcohol (2004).
