Knox College will hold a campus-wide memorial on Friday, November 2, for Tundun Lawani '14, who died Sunday, October 28, after she was struck by a car in Galesburg.
The Lawani family will be gathering Friday for a visitation at 1 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. (Eastern Time) in New City Church in Peachtree City, Georgia.
At 1 p.m. (Central Time), the same time that the memorial service begins in Georgia, the College will toll the bell in Old Main and observe a community moment of silence.
The Knox community was invited to pause for the moment of silence "to remember Tundun at the same moment as her family is celebrating her life," said Knox College President Teresa Amott in a message to the campus. "I hope these memorial events help you to find solace in the midst of this sorrowful time," Amott said.
Arrangements have been made to allow students to attend the memorial in Georgia. Information is available from the Campus Life Office, 309-341-7527.
Also on Friday afternoon, Tundun's friends have organized a memorial service celebrating her life and her faith to be held at 4:00 p.m. in Central Congregational Church, 60 Public Square, Galesburg. This service is open to all members of the Knox and Galesburg communities. Music and readings of special significance to Tundun will be shared, and there will be an opportunity for those present to share personal thoughts and memories of her. Several local clergy members will be present for anyone who may want to seek additional spiritual guidance.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be sent to support the church youth ministry: Passion Student Ministry, at New City Church, 320 Dividend Drive, Peachtree City, GA, 30269.
