Peace Corps Week 2010

Speakers to discuss their service, Knox's Peace Corps Preparatory Program

Knox College - Peace CorpsKnox College sponsors a series of presentations to mark Peace Corps Week, March 1-7 on the Knox campus. The events are free and open to the public. The schedule of speakers is:

Tuesday, March 2, 6:30 p.m., Ferris Lounge, Seymour Union
Speaker: Jeff Wozencraft, Knox Class of 2010
"The Peace Corps Application Process"
Wozencraft has been nominated to serve in Latin America as a Peace Corps Volunteer. He will share his experiences as he worked his way through the application process and now awaits word of his official assignment. Wednesday, March 3, 4:00 p.m., Ferris Lounge
Speaker: Sarah Stewart, Peace Corps Volunteer 2002-2004
"Peace Corps: A Journey of A Thousand Miles"
Stewart is currently a principal in the ROWVA school district. She served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Gambia from 2002-2004 and will share her experiences.

Thursday, March 4, 4:00 p.m., Ferris Lounge
Speakers: Heidi Britton and Leo Dion, Peace Corps Volunteers 2004-2006
"A Stop Along the Silk Road: Turkmenistan"
Britton is Administrator of the Knox County Health Department. From 2004 to 2006, she served as a community health educator for the Peace Corps in Turkmenistan. There she worked to organize informational seminars on nutrition, maternal health and fitness for pregnant women. She was also a member of the Peace Corps Turkmenistan HIV-AIDS Coalition.

In 2007, Knox and the Peace Corps signed a memorandum of cooperation, creating a Peace Corps Preparatory Program at Knox to prepare students for international service. A special, internationally-focused curriculum is aimed a making Knox students strong candidates for the Peace Corps, ultimately helping the agency expand its pool of qualified candidates.

Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 47 states and 48 countries. Knox's 'Old Main' is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
