Steven Phillips, Chief Biological Safety Officer at the Baylor Research Institute, will give lectures on medical research and on patents and genetic engineering, on March 26 and 27 at Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois. The talks are free and open to the public.
Phillips, a 1971 Knox College graduate, will give a lecture, "Patents: Separating Fact and Fiction," at 4 p.m., Monday, March 26; and "From Bench to Bedside: Medical Research at Baylor Research Institute," at 4 p.m., Tuesday, March 27. Both lectures are in the Francois Room E-117, Umbeck Science-Mathematics Center.
Phillips earned his bachelor's degree at Knox in chemistry and biology, and master's and doctoral degrees in microbiology at Ohio State University. Following a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Rochester School of Medicine, he joined Dow Chemical Company in 1980. During his 17 years at Dow, he founded a research program in genetic engineering. He then worked for Occidental Chemical Corp. for five years, prior to taking his current position at the Baylor Research Institute in Dallas, Texas.
Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 46 states and 46 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
