Romano Keynotes Conference

Xavier Romano, Vice President for Student Development and Dean of Students at Knox College, recently was a keynote speaker at a regional institute of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA).

Romano addressed the NASPA Region IV-East New Professionals Institute on the topic "The Student Affairs Educator in the 21st Century." He also served as a faculty member for the institute, November 9-10 in Indianapolis.

The institute, designed for student affairs professionals with less than three years experience, accepted just 50 participants from colleges and universities in a five-state region and the Canadian province of Ontario. It was conducted in advance of NASPA's annual Region IV-East conference, held November 11-13 in Indianapolis.

Romano serves on NASPA's national board and its Latino Advisory Board. He also is a member of the American Association for Higher Education, Association for the Study of Higher Education, Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, National Association of College Admissions Counselors, and the National Association of Foreign Student Advisors.

Romano earned a bachelor's degree at the University of Oregon and a master's degree at Santa Clara University, with additional graduate work at the University of San Francisco and the Harvard University Institute for Educational Management. He also has studied in Germany on a Fulbright Fellowship in international education. At Knox since 1998, he heads the Office of Student Development and is an instructor in the Department of Educational Studies. His research interests include comparative structures of educational systems in the United States, United Kingdom and Germany.

Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 45 states and 44 nations. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
