Free, public events at Knox College during the 2013 Sandburg Days Festival:

April 17, 4 p.m., Alumni Room, Old Main
Lecture-Reading: "The Public's Poet," Kevin Stein. Illinois Poet Laureate Kevin Stein will read from his own work and discuss the nature and significance of poetry in our lives. Stein was named Illinois Poet Laureate in 2003. He also serves as Caterpillar Professor of English and the director of the creative writing program at Bradley University. Stein's poetry has been acclaimed for its passion, humor and insight, reflecting on everyday experience with a surprising eye.

April 19, 4:00 p.m., Ferris Lounge, Seymour Union
Concert: Ken Waldman. Long known as "Alaska's Fiddling Poet," Ken Waldman has drawn on his 25 years as an author, performer and college professor to produce poems, stories and fiddle tunes that combine into a performance uniquely his own. His published works include six full-length poetry collections, a memoir and a children's book. He has recorded nine CDs that combine old-time, Appalachian-style string-band music with original poetry. Sponsored in part by the John & Elaine Fellowes Fund at Knox College.

April 20, 4:00 p.m., Ferris Lounge, Seymour Union
Poetry Awards Ceremony. Winners in the Knox College Sandburg Days Poetry Competition will read their award-winning poems. The contest is open to all Knox County students in grades 5-8. Winners receive cash prizes from Knox College, and their poems will be published on the Knox College website. The judges are faculty in the Knox College English Department.
