Christine Steyer Recital

Master Class on March 30; Recital on March 31

Soprano Christine Steyer will give a voice recital at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, March 31, in Kresge Hall, Ford Center for the Fine Arts, Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois. The recital is free and open to the public.

A 1992 Knox College graduate, Steyer was recently awarded first place in the 2006 National Opera Association Competition. She will perform selections by Hugo Wolf, Joseph Canteloube and Johann Strauss. Steyer also will conduct private master classes with Knox College music students on Friday, March 30.

The students who participated in the master class, and their selections, were:

  • Beth Golemo, "Sento nel core," A. Scarlatti
  • Lily Wirth, "Un moto di gioja," Mozart
  • Devyn Mares, "In si barbara" from Semiramis, Rossini
  • John Eisemann, "Bright is the Ring of Words," from Songs of Travel, Vaughan Williams
  • Sammi Heimstreet, "Porgi amor," from Le Nozze di Figaro, Mozart

Steyer has sung in productions with Lyric Opera of Chicago and the DuPage Opera, including the lead role in Carlisle Floyd's "Susannah." This year, she will make her Tulsa Opera debut with roles in "Carmen" and "The Crucible." Steyer also has performed on the WFMT program "Live from Studio One"; at the Chicago Cultural Center; in Modena, Italy; and at a benefit concert with Samuel Ramey in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. In the past year, she has sung more than twenty recitals throughout the Midwest, performing operatic selections, American music and art songs. She has performed several times as a soloist with the Galesburg Community Chorus. 

In addition, bass-baritone Paul Geiger, will perform several selections.

Steyer and Geiger will be accompanied by pianist Celeste Rue. Rue is staff accompanist for the Grant Park Chorus and the Lyric Opera Center for American Artists. She also works with Lyric Opera of Chicago, Chicago Opera Theatre, Music of the Baroque, Light Opera Works, Ars Musica and the Apollo Chorus, and has performed extensively as a soloist and accompanist.

Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 45 states and 44 nations. Knox's 'Old Main' is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
