Summer Internship Spotlight: Elicia Bibbs

Elicia Bibbs is interning with the alternative investment division of Pinnacle Absolute in Barcelona, Spain, where she is learning about how the economic crisis has affected the European economy. Elicia is a senior from Chicago, Illinois, majoring in Spanish and minoring in international relations.

Tell us about your internship and day-to-day experiences.

Pinnacle Absolute focuses on alternative investments against the stock market, such as investment grade diamonds, gold, carbon credits, and antique art. A normal day in the office begins with a morning briefing, which consists of a group reading of current economic events throughout Europe. Then we discuss the previous day, the clients we spoke with, and the types of opportunities that are showing the most return and benefit to each client. After the briefing, I either listen in on meetings, take notes, speak to clients, give presentations, or work alongside the managers.

How did you learn about this opportunity?

I received an e-mail from the current director of the Knox-Barcelona study abroad program. I applied, had three interviews during the course of six months, and was later notified that I had been chosen for the internship.

What inspired you to pursue the internship?

I pursued this internship because I really wanted to stay in Barcelona for the summer. Along with the internship, I continue to take Spanish classes.

Can you cite an example of how your in-classroom experiences at Knox have benefited you in the internship?

My in-classroom experiences at Knox definitely played a role in my internship as far as being comfortable giving speeches and PowerPoint presentations in front of an audience. Because of Knox's hands-on approach, I feel right at home whenever I have to verbally express or explain myself.

What has been the coolest part of your internship?

The coolest part of my internship is that the office is in the World Trade Center of Barcelona; the building itself is a tourist attraction. We have a great ocean view, and it is right along the beach.

How do you think this internship will benefit you in terms of your personal development?

Being as I am in the working world in comparison to on campus, my outlook on what it means to be on your own has definitely changed.
