Knox President Named to NCAA Presidents Council

Knox College President Teresa Amott

Dr. Teresa Amott, President of Knox College, is the newest member of the NCAA Division III Presidents Council.

The Presidents Council is Division III's primary governance body, overseeing the Division III Management Council and the Division's committee structure. The Presidents Council meets at the NCAA Headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana, on a quarterly basis: during the second week of January at the NCAA Convention, in late April, early August, and late October.

Amott, who joined the DIII Chancellors and Presidents Advisory Group (PAG) last August, was recognized for her critical engagement and thoughtful questions, leading to her nomination by peers to fill an immediate vacancy on the Divisions' highest governing body. Her service is immediately effective and ends January 2018; however, she is eligible for re-election up to a full four-year term.

"I am delighted that President Amott is joining the Council," commented Dan Dutcher, Vice President for Division III. "The residential liberal arts colleges perspective of members like Knox College and The Midwest Conference represent an important constituency and perspective within Division III."

Dr. Amott received her bachelor's degree in economics from Smith College and her Ph.D. in economics from Boston College. She began her professional career at Wellesley College then held academic appointments at University of Massachusetts-Amherst, University of Massachusetts-Boston, Bucknell, and Harvard. Amott was Vice Provost at Gettysburg College from 2000-2005 and Provost and Dean of the Faculty at Hobart and William Smith Colleges from 2005-2011. In July of 2011, Dr. Amott became the first female president of Knox College.

"President Amott will be an excellent addition to the DIII Presidents Council," Heather Benning, Midwest Conference Executive Director said. "As a member of the Midwest Conference Board of Directors, she has proven a willingness to ask tough questions and place the league in the context of the larger Division. President Amott values academic achievement and competitive excellence and knows, from experience at a variety of DIII institutions, that these need not be mutually exclusive. In our league we use the hashtag #PresidentialEngagement—President Amott is DIII Engaged."

Amott will attend her first meeting this week, when the Council meets in Indianapolis, home of the NCAA.

"I look forward to serving on the Division III Presidents Council and supporting DIII student athletes as they reach for excellence," offered Amott. "I especially look forward to the opportunity to bring the values of the Midwest Conference into strategic discussions and decisions in my term on the Council."
