The staff of The Knox Student, Knox College's weekly student newspaper, received nine awards at the 2007 Illinois College Press Association annual convention Feb. 17 in Chicago. The Knox Student competed in the category for non-daily newspapers with circulations of less than 4,000.
Photo Editor Andy Fitz won two first prizes, for Best Feature Photograph and Best Sports Photograph. Columnist B.J. Hollars received first prize for Best Column.
Editor-in-Chief Eris Mayeroff received third prize for Best News Story. Mayeroff, Managing Editor Tom Fucoloro and former Managing Editor Julio Trujillo won third place for In-depth Reporting. Trujillo graduated from Knox in 2006 and is currently in graduate school in journalism at the University of Texas at Austin.
Sports Editor Jesse Temple was awarded two third place honors for Best Sports News Story and Best Sports Feature Story, in addition to an honorable mention in the Sports News Story category.
Former Sports Editor Cigi Ross earned an honorable mention in Headline Writing. Ross graduated from Knox in 2006 and is currently a reporter for the Galesburg Register-Mail.
The Illinois College Press Association annual newspaper competition drew entries from 37 college and university newspapers this year. Entries were judged by professional journalists at Illinois newspapers.
The Knox Student was founded in 1878 by S.S. McClure who, after graduating from Knox, created McClure's Magazine, one of the first publications in the field of American investigative journalism.
