Two Knox Athletes Represent the United States in International Play

Two Knox athletes are representing the United States in international play over winter break. Knox football defensive back Armand Stricklin '16 will play in Mexico with Team Stars and Stripes at the seventh annual Tazón de Estrellas (Bowl of the Stars) and men's soccer player Hank Horwitz '18 is headed to Chile as a member of Team USA for the Pan American Maccabi Games.

Stricklin concluded his senior year with 26 total tackles, an interception, and two passes broken up. He was a big reason the Prairie Fire defense limited opponents to 171.8 passing yards per game, the fourth-lowest total in the league. "This is a big opportunity not just for me, but for the Knox program and young athletes who believe that the only way for you to be successful as an athlete is to be on a major stage or be a superstar all your life," Stricklin said.

Knox College is one of a record 27 Division III schools being represented on the 40-man Stars and Stripes roster. The Tazón de Estrellas is the focal point for the Global Football Foundation, which assists athletes in realizing their dreams of competing against other American football enthusiasts and experiencing different cultures.

Horwitz started 18 of 19 games for the Knox men's soccer team this year at right back. He helped the Prairie Fire to an undefeated 8-0-1 record at home and 13-3-3 record overall with his darting runs and tough-nosed tackling. Often called upon to match up against opponents' best attacker, Hank stood tall time and time again.

For his efforts, Horwitz has been selected to a Team USA roster with players from some of the best schools across the country. The 10-day tournament brings together elite amateur athletes of Jewish faith from around the world to promote community and pride. The event also includes three community service projects, including a food drive, hospital visits, and free eye examinations and glasses for more than 1,000 Chilean children.
