U.S. Army Honors Knox Admission Staff

DeVone Eurales, assistant director of admission at Knox College, was honored recently by the United States Army for his volunteer work at the Warrior Transition Battalion at Fort Carson, Colorado. While on vacation in Colorado in May, Eurales led an informational session for more than 20 service members at Fort Carson on how to apply for college.

"In the short time that he was here, Mr. Eurales managed to paint a picture for college entrance -- specifically, what comprises a 'great' college application -- that many of these Warriors had never seen or heard of before," wrote Captain Michael B. Hensley, commanding officer of the battalion's Charlie Company in a June 7 letter to Knox College President Roger Taylor.

The Army's Warrior Transition program provides support and care for wounded, ill and injured soldiers and their families.

Eurales "engaged and challenged the group to explore, understand and improve themselves, society and our world... One Soldier in my command particularly commented that the information gained was the most beneficial class he had taken while in Warrior Transition Battalion thus far," Hensley wrote. "This is a testament to the high caliber of professionals you employ in your fine institution."

Hensley sent Taylor a plaque, which recognizes Eurales for his "outstanding contributions to the goal setting briefing" at Fort Carson. Taylor presented the plaque to Eurales on June 15.

Eurales is a 2001 graduate of Cairo High School in Cairo, Illinois, and a 2005 graduate of Illinois College. He joined the Knox College Office of Admission in 2008, serving as assistant director of admission and coordinator of multicultural recruitment. He advises applicants to Knox from multi-state region that includes Chicago, as well as Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia, as well as the Virgin Islands.

Founded in 1837, Knox is a national liberal arts college in Galesburg, Illinois, with students from 45 states and 48 countries. Knox's "Old Main" is a National Historic Landmark and the only building remaining from the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates.
