Results of WYSE Sectional Competition at Knox College

More than 270 students from 27 high schools in western Illinois participated this week in the Knox College Sectional of the 2008 Academic Challenge Competition sponsored by WYSE (Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering). The sectional competition was held Monday, March 17 in Knox's Umbeck Science Mathematics Center.

The WYSE Academic Challenge includes tests in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, mathematics, and physics. Each student competes in only two of the seven subjects. The competition is open to high school students in Illinois and Missouri.

Competition is held in four divisions -- 300, 700, 1500 and Unlimited -- based on enrollment. All the teams and individuals that competed at Knox had advanced from earlier regional competitions held in February at Carl Sandburg College, John Wood Community College and Western Illinois University.

Nine of the schools will advance teams to the state finals, April 14-17 at the University of Illinois - Urbana. In addition, 16 students from 11 schools will advance as individuals to the state finals.

Results listed below indicate the school teams and individuals in each division that will advance to the state finals. For the teams advancing, the faculty advisor is listed. For the individuals advancing to the finals, the listing also indicates which subject(s) the individual student will compete in at the finals.
