More than 200 high school students from throughout western Illinois participated this week in the Knox College Sectional of the 2009 Academic Challenge Competition sponsored by WYSE (Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering). The sectional competition was held Monday, March 16 in Knox's Umbeck Science Mathematics Center.
The WYSE Academic Challenge includes tests in biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering graphics, English, mathematics, and physics. Each student competes in only two of the seven subjects. The competition is open to high school students in Illinois and Missouri.
Competition is held in four divisions -- 300, 700, 1500 and Unlimited -- based on enrollment. All the teams and individuals that competed at Knox had advanced from earlier regional competitions. The 2009 state finals are April 6-9, hosted by the University of Illinois - Urbana.
