Applying for your Social Security Number
Congratulations on finding a campus job!
After finding a campus job, you should complete payroll information at the Business Office. You will then need to apply for a Social Security Number (SSN) at the Social Security Administration (SSA) in Galesburg. You'll need to take the following documents to apply:
When filling out the SSN application, reference the following advice:
Once you have gathered all your required documents, you will need to schedule an appointment to visit the Social Security Administration (SSA) office. Use the link provided above in Step 4 to begin your Social Security card application. After completing the online portion, the system will prompt you to make an appointment at your local SSA office. Be sure to enter the zip code 61401 to find the Galesburg location, and select an appointment time that works with your class schedule.
The Galesburg SSA office is located at 2060 Windish Drive. You can get there by bus or taxi—the nearest bus stop is the KCCDD stop. You can pick up a copy of the bus route and schedule from the Office of International Student Services.
Cultural Centers and Student Organizations
Cultural centers and student organizations play an important role in the lives of many Knox students. Seven cultural centers—International House, A.B.L.E. Center for Black Culture, Casa Latina, Asian Cultural Center, Harambee Club, Q&A House (Queer and Ally House), and the Human Rights Center—promote cultural awareness and are open to all members of the Knox community.
Knox students are involved in more than one hundred organizations, which include cultural and political, religious, academic, social, and student governance organizations, as well as others. Joining an organization—or taking on a leadership role—is a great way to become involved at Knox.
