How Does Pre-health Work at Knox?

Pre-health at Knox encompasses all health professions and welcomes students interested in a variety of fields, including medicine (MD/DO), physician/scientist (MD/PhD), nursing, physician assistant, optometry, dentistry, public health, athletic training, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and more. Students are encouraged to major and minor in disciplines they are passionate about; there is no required major for any health profession. While many of our pre-health students choose to major in the sciences, it is common to see a double major or minor in the arts, humanities, or social sciences.

Students often indicate interest in pre-health with the Knox Admissions Office before the first term of their first year. If a student decides on pre-health later, they should communicate that interest to the Vovis Center for Research and Advanced Study and Health Professions Advising.

Advising

At the foundation of Vovis Center support is one-on-one, individualized advising. In addition to your faculty academic advisor, who helps plan major and minor requirements, Vovis Center pre-health advisors help students explore the health professions and decide on a health career path. Once decided, pre-health advisors explain the coursework necessary for the health profession and help the student plan out their coursework at Knox, in conjunction with major and minor requirements. Advisors connect students to shadowing, clinical, and research opportunities as they prepare to apply to a graduate health profession program and also provide important support related to the actual application process, including preparing for admissions exams like the MCAT or DAT, interview practice, and essay writing.

Our advisors know that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to any healthcare profession, and they will help you find the right path for you. All pre-health students are encouraged to meet with their pre-health advisor regularly throughout their time at Knox. Health Professions Advising is available to support students after graduation from Knox, through acceptance into a graduate/professional program.
