To maintain a vibrant and respectful campus environment, Knox College establishes the following guidelines for posting signs, flyers, and other materials on campus.
General Guidelines
- Content must align with the College’s values of respect, inclusion, and academic integrity. Materials containing hate speech, discriminatory language, or false/misleading information will not be approved and may be removed by the College.
- Posters/flyers for events must clearly include the sponsoring organization, contact information, and event details (if applicable).
- Any sign may be removed from College property at the College’s sole discretion.
Designated Posting Areas
- Bulletin Boards: Posting is permitted on bulletin boards that are not designated for use by academic or administrative departments or individual student organizations.
- Posting is not allowed in Alumni Hall.
- Digital Displays: Campus events and announcements can be shared via the digital displays in Seymour Union. Posters/flyers can be emailed to campuslife@knox.edu for posting to digital displays.
- Windows and Doors: Posting is not permitted on doors or windows in non-residential spaces. In residential spaces, students may not post any signage or decoration in the windows; nothing is allowed to cover or hang from the ceilings, obstruct passageways, cover windows, or fire safety equipment.
- Building Exteriors: Posting/chalking is not allowed on exterior building surfaces.
- Outdoor Areas (Grass, Walkways, Poles, etc):
- Lawn signs for events must be approved in advance by Campus Life and are limited to designated areas. Signs must be removed within 24 hours after the advertised event. No other lawn signs are permitted on College property (including leased premises), including signs endorsing political candidates.
- Posting on lampposts, trees, benches, or trash bins is not permitted.
- Sidewalk chalking is only allowed on sidewalks and must use removable chalk.
Removal and Enforcement
- Unauthorized postings may be removed without notice.
- Groups or individuals who repeatedly violate the policy may face restrictions on future postings or other disciplinary actions.
- Knox College reserves the right to remove any postings that have become outdated or damaged.
