Randol planned to study psychology, but the liberal arts environment at Knox gave her the freedom to explore her interests.

Gabrielle Randol ’25

Gabrielle Randol '25 is a first-generation college student whose passion for education stems from her own transformative journey.

Randol’s connection to Knox began with her selection as a Gale Scholar, a program that provides resources and support to Galesburg students pursuing higher education. “I think being able to come here as a whole is just something that I don't really take for granted,” she added, reflecting on her journey.

Initially, Randol planned to study psychology, but the liberal arts environment at Knox gave her the freedom to explore her interests. She soon discovered her passion for teaching, which redefined her academic and career aspirations.

“That’s one of the perks of being in a liberal arts college, you get enough time to explore and find out what suits you best,” she said.

Looking ahead, she stressed how she wants to teach others how important a college education is. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without having the mentors and guidance I required, and that is what I want to continue doing for other students like me,” she said.

Randol pointed to the support of key mentors at Knox, especially Professor of Educational Studies Deirdre Dougherty, who inspired her with a unique approach to combining history with education. She also deeply admires TRIO Academic Coordinator Laura Bush who has been instrumental throughout her Knox journey.

As a first-generation student, Gabrielle shared her view of initially having imposter syndrome. Joining TRIO made a significant impact on her overall Knox experience. “I was really shy when I first came here. TRIO played a huge role in helping me feel like I belonged. From tutoring to emotional support on tough days, they were always there for me,” she recalled. Her favorite part about TRIO is the TRIO bridge program, which introduces first-year students to college life a week before the term begins by providing resources and helping them form early bonds.

Living off campus, Gabrielle works at a local coffee shop, which helps her stay involved in the local community. This also gives her the flexibility to spend time with her twin sister. “I see a lot of Knox students and my friends there,” she says. “It’s a nice way to stay connected.”

As she nears graduation, Gabrielle plans to pursue a career in TRIO programs, where she hopes to take on roles to advise and mentor other students professionally. She hopes to share the support and encouragement she received to help others succeed. “Gale Scholars set me up for success and made sure I wasn’t alone,” she said. “I want to do that for other students.”
